How Journey Mode Works

Journey Mode is Trakaido's primary learning experience. It combines spaced repetition science with varied activities to help you build lasting vocabulary knowledge.

Words are introduced gradually and reviewed at optimal intervals
Activities become more challenging as your mastery increases
The system tracks your performance and adapts accordingly
Each session provides a balanced mix of new learning and review

Journey Mode Overview

The Tier System

Words progress through 4 tiers as you demonstrate mastery

Tier 1: New Words

Just introduced (0-2 correct). Shown frequently with easier activities like multiple choice and listening.

Tier 2: Learning

Getting familiar (3-5 correct). More activity variety including typing and spelling quiz.

Tier 3: Practicing

Building confidence (5-10 correct). Full range of activities with emphasis on typing and spelling.

Tier 4: Mastered

Well learned (10+ correct). Typing-focused practice with occasional listening and category choice for retention.

Focus Modes

Customize your learning session with different focus modes:

Normal: Balanced mix of new words and review based on the algorithm
New Words: Focus on learning new vocabulary from your selected materials
Review: Only practice words you've already learned
Mistakes: Target words you've gotten wrong recently
Sentences: Practice with complete sentences in context

Adaptive Activities

Journey Mode selects activities based on your tier level:

Tier 1: Multiple choice and listening for recognition (50% each)
Tier 2: Adds typing and spelling quiz for production practice
Tier 3: More typing emphasis with spelling quiz and category choice
Tier 4: Typing-focused (60%) with listening, spelling quiz, and category choice

This progression ensures you're challenged appropriately as your knowledge grows.

The Science of Spaced Repetition

Journey Mode's algorithm is designed based on memory research:

Weighted Selection: Words are selected based on tier weights, ensuring optimal review timing
Anti-Repetition: Prevents overwhelming you with too many new words at once
Mistake Tracking: Words you struggle with get more frequent practice
Long-term Retention: Mastered words are still reviewed occasionally to maintain knowledge
